Our Consultation Services
Reducing the use of seclusion and restraint
Unrecognized and unmanaged conflict can escalate into potentially violent situations, resulting in injuries or in coercive interventions. Typical “violence prevention” programs focus on management of patient behaviors. In contrast, the CCMMH approach helps staff and administrators to create an organizational culture of nonviolence. Includes:
- Strategies for developing leadership, vision and stakeholder involvement
- Identifying conflict "hotspots"
- Recognizing emerging conflict
- Training staff in using conflict management
- Developing your own mediation program
Developing trauma-informed programs
For trauma survivors, re-establishing a sense of control is critical to recovery, particularly in situations involving interpersonal conflict. Managing conflict effectively is a key component of trauma informed programs. Includes:
- Sensitizing staff to the effects of trauma
- Identifying how program procedures or staff behaviors may trigger memories of abuse
- Teaching skills for leveling power imbalances and managing differences without causing re-traumatization
Implementing coordinated systems of care for children and families
For children and their families, the keys to effective services are flexibility, coordination, and family involvement. Unacknowledged conflicts between individuals or agencies can derail even well intentioned collaborations. Includes:
- Developing procedures for resolving interagency disputes
- Teaching staff to identify and resolve emerging conflict
- Working with staff and families towards reconciliation
- Training family advocates in conflict management
Developing peer-mediation programs
Conflict management can provide concrete tools for recovery and empowerment. Consumer-survivors and family members who have skills in conflict management are more effective advocates and change agents. Includes:
- Training consumer and non-consumer staff to recognize and manage conflict
- Designing and developing peer mediation programs
- Training consumer-survivors or family members to be mediators
