Our History
CCMMH was founded in 2000 with funding from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Our initial focus was on the role of conflict in mental health institutions such as state hospitals – using conflict management techniques to create empowering organizations, reduce the use of coercive procedures such as seclusion and restraint, and support recovery. This issue was championed by the National Association of State Mental Health Directors, who partnered with CCMMH on several projects. We have also collaborated with community mediation programs in Maine and New Hampshire in developing and evaluating innovative community-based conflict management approaches and training programs.
Our Training Programs
CCMMH offers training in conflict management:
- For staff at psychiatric hospitals or residential programs
- For peer specialists and other consumer-run programs
- For case managers and other direct service providers in both adult and children’s mental health programs
- For mediators wanting to learn more about mental health issues
Our Current Focus
CCMMH’s most recent project is a study of the impact of interagency and inter-systems conflict in the development of children’s systems of care (SOC). This study reflects a growing awareness that unrecognized conflict can derail collaboration and undermine systems transformation efforts.
